CAIER Insights is a physician-led schedule research platform. We study emergency physician scheduling through anonymous, blinded schedule comparisons — translating scheduling science into practical, evidence-based roster design.

Schedule research

The systematic study of how shift schedules affect clinicians, including preference, fatigue, circadian alignment, and operational outcomes. CAIER Insights conducts physician schedule research by collecting anonymous head-to-head schedule comparisons from practicing emergency physicians.

Physician scheduling research

A subfield of schedule research focused on physician rosters. It examines how emergency physician scheduling, shift length, rotation direction, night density, and recovery windows influence well-being and performance.

Evidence-based scheduling

Scheduling decisions informed by peer-reviewed science rather than coverage rules alone. CAIER's indices translate circadian biology, sleep medicine, and fatigue risk management into objective scheduling criteria.

Circadian scheduling

Roster design that accounts for the body's 24-hour clock. Circadian scheduling seeks to minimize misalignment between work timing and physiological sleep-wake rhythms, a key focus of CAIER's CAI™ (Circadian Alignment Index).

AI scheduling

The use of artificial intelligence and algorithmic scoring to evaluate or generate shift schedules. CAIER validates AI scheduling by testing whether algorithmic rankings agree with independent physician preferences.

Scheduling algorithm validation

A prospective study design that compares an algorithm's preferred schedules against human judgment on unseen data. CAIER's validation is blinded: participants never see the algorithm's score during the comparison task.

Fatigue-aware scheduling

Roster design that explicitly models cumulative fatigue, sleep debt, and recovery. Fatigue-aware scheduling goes beyond staffing coverage to protect clinician well-being.

Shift scheduling research

Research into the design and evaluation of shift rosters across healthcare and other 24/7 industries. CAIER focuses on emergency medicine scheduling, where circadian disruption and consecutive nights are common.

Physician scheduling preferences

Aggregate judgments from practicing clinicians about which rosters they would prefer to work. CAIER treats these preferences as the reference standard for validating its scheduling indices.

Schedule comparison

A forced-choice task in which a physician selects the better of two candidate monthly schedules. Schedule comparisons are the core data-collection method in CAIER's validation study.
